Research and Provenance

Every record in The Dead Air Archive carries a history of its own. Some survive intact. Others exist only as copied notes, partial recordings, damaged photographs, secondhand accounts, or material reconstructed from several surviving sources.

Provenance notes identify what is known about a record’s origin, what has been lost or changed, and where the surviving account becomes uncertain.

Reading a Provenance Note

A provenance note may identify the kind of source behind a record, whether names or locations have been altered, whether several accounts were combined, and which details remain disputed. It describes the limits of the surviving material rather than resolving them.

Archive Status

Active. Material currently available in the archive.

Fragmentary. Only part of the record survives or can be reconstructed.

Sealed. The record exists, but access to its contents is restricted.

Withheld. The archive acknowledges the material without reproducing it.

Absence does not necessarily mean nothing was recorded. Sometimes it only means nothing usable remains.
